Shanghai Hens?

This old advertisement really got me the first time I saw it, but remember it's running in 1855, and it wasn't until the 1870's that the name "Cochin" stuck on the birds from China.  Cochins were such a wonderful silky soft bird that the Orpington Family bred them with the Sussex chicken to make, what else, but the Orpington Chicken.


 Shanghai Hens "Wanted. THOSE who have  these Fowls for sale will please address us, with particulars as to character of stock, and their price;  call on us at our office. WARREN & SON. California Stage Company. Office at the Orleans Hotel, Sacramento.
